 When we met, Denise was a mortgage broker and I was in marketing and admissions at a small liberal arts college. In just a few months, we had the opportunity to purchase a failing RV campground business. After trying to get financing from at least 50 banks, one hard money lender finally agreed to loan enough money to purchase the property. 

We eventually got past the “emergency” objectives on our list---like literally putting out electrical fires at the camper hook ups and replacing all the aging and insufficient infrastructure throughout the park. We did a lot of painting, planting, digging, training, cleaning, and dreaming of a successful business.

Fast forward 16 years, and the campground business is profitable, has doubled in size with additional acquisition of land, has a top-rated team dedicated to guest services, and was awarded the coveted KOA Franchisee of the Year for 2020.

During the entire time rebuilding the campground business, we always focused on one goal: happy campers. But, we really didn’t know exactly what that meant. We just worked hard each day and tried to treat people right. 

We knew we needed to formalize what we were really doing, so, we began to put on paper what we believed was important for our lives and life of the business. What are we really doing? And, more importantly, why are we doing it? We didn’t even camp! Not the easiest questions to answer, but vitally important for long-term success.

Here’s what we discovered to be true: 

We learned that our core values could not be compromised or discounted when engaging in our business practices. Our businesses are a reflection of who we are to the core. 

So, why do we do what we do—in business, relationships, health and wealth?

We raise the bar. We challenge the standards. We defy the notion of “good enough”.
